Students at the Private Kaisei Junior & Senior High School Develop a Mobile Ordering System for the School Cafeteria and Introduce “PayPay” as a Payment Method!

- Supporting cashless transactions in school and easing cafeteria congestion through mobile ordering and PayPay payments -

PayPay Corporation (hereinafter PayPay) is pleased to announce that “PayPay” will be adopted as a payment method for the mobile ordering system to be introduced in the cafeteria of Kaisei Junior & Senior High School (operated by Trusty Food Co., Ltd.) from September 2024 onward. Two students of Kaisei Senior High School, one in the third year and one in the second, saw the crowded line for the meal ticket machine in the cafeteria as an issue, so they proposed and developed a mobile ordering system, and introduced PayPay payments by using the “Open Payment API (Application Programming Interface) (*1)”, which PayPay has made available for developers. This new ordering and payment method is expected to alleviate lunchtime congestion in the school’s cafeteria and make it cashless.

Kaisei Junior & Senior High School is a private mixed junior high and high school with a total enrollment of over 2,000 students. During lunch, many students had to line up at the meal ticket machine to purchase their meal tickets, limiting the amount of time they had to eat. In a pre-survey conducted by the students(*3) in preparation for the introduction of the system, approximately 60% of the students answered that they had given up using the meal ticket machine because of the long wait time, and more than half of the students answered that they had eaten in a hurry because they did not have enough time. This indicates that many students felt inconvenienced by the wait time at the meal ticket machine. The cafeteria company also felt the risk of lost opportunities due to long queues, and decided to introduce a mobile ordering system to solve the problem.

Two students at the school developed a mobile ordering system that allows students to order and complete the payment process in advance. By installing the system in the cafeteria, students can choose their lunch menu during break time and pick it up at their preferred time, which is expected to spread out the usage and reduce the crowding in line to the meal ticket machines. PayPay payments were introduced based on the survey results showing that 70% of the students who responded used PayPay, and the fact that PayPay has made the Open Payment API available to developers.

PayPay has been focusing on efforts to attract younger users, particularly teenagers. In addition to the “New Year’s Gift Lottery” and regional “Extra Pocket Money Campaigns,” PayPay is being introduced to a growing number of online shopping sites that are popular among young consumers.
Additionally, from this fiscal year, PayPay has begun the full-scale introduction of payments to nationwide school festivals, club activity fees, lunch fees and educational material fees at schools, and the number of inquiries from school-related parties exceeded three times that of the previous fiscal year(*4).
As a result of these efforts, the number of users between the ages of 10 and 18(*5) grew significantly, increasing approximately 30% year-on-year as of June 30, 2024. PayPay believes that there is still significant room for growth in attracting these younger users. Starting with the introduction of payments to the cafeteria of Kaisei Junior & Senior High School, PayPay will continue to accelerate the introduction of PayPay payments to schools and other cash-based payment scenarios to provide safe, secure, and convenient payment services to all users, including younger generations, and to strongly promote the cashless society in Japan.
