PayPay Corporation (hereinafter PayPay) is pleased to announce that from December 10, 2024, users will be able to use the default-installed smartphone camera app (*1) on both iOS and Android platforms to scan QR codes (*2) provided by PayPay merchants to directly complete a payment using PayPay (*3). Through this even more convenient experience, users can make payments without opening the PayPay app.

*1. Apps other than the smartphone OS camera app pre-installed in the smartphone are not supported. To access the new feature, the user needs to use the standard camera that comes pre-installed with the smartphone.
*2. This feature is available for the user scan payment method (MPM: Merchant Presented Mode).
*3. Some PayPay merchant QR codes cannot be used for payments with this feature. In such cases, it will be necessary to open the PayPay app to complete the payment. To use this feature, the PayPay app must be updated to the latest iOS or Android version.
Previously, users had to open the PayPay app and tap the “Scan” icon on the home screen to activate the camera, scan the QR code provided by PayPay merchants, and complete the payment. Without knowing this process, many users have been unsuccessfully scanning the QR code with the pre-installed OS camera app, resulting in failure to make the payment.
Now, via a dedicated web page that is launched after unlocking the smartphone and scanning the QR code using the OS camera app, the user will be redirected to the payment screen in PayPay (*4), allowing even those users unfamiliar with the use of smartphones or the PayPay app to quickly and easily complete a payment.
The dedicated web page exists to impose certain restrictions for preventing fraud as well as unintentional consecutive payments made by repeatedly scanning the same QR code by mistake, in which case, an error screen will be displayed.
PayPay will continue to strive for a world where users and all types of restaurants and service providers can enjoy the convenience of cashless payment and use the cashless payment service with confidence anywhere in Japan. Furthermore, PayPay aims to evolve from a payment app into a super app that enriches users’ lives and makes them more convenient, fostering a world where paying “Anytime, Anywhere with PayPay” is a reality. As the company was designated by the Financial Services Agency as a Specified Essential Infrastructure Service Provider in November 2023, PayPay is committed to continue providing an even safer and more secure environment for users.
*4. This feature is not enabled when the smartphone is offline since the transition to the dedicated web page cannot be made. However, if the merchant provides a merchant scan payment method (CPM: Customer Presented Mode), users can make payments with the offline payment mode.
