Both PayPay and LINE Pay have been pursuing a common goal of promoting a cashless society in Japan by providing a payment service that can be used as a social infrastructure. To date, both companies have undertaken a variety of initiatives to make mobile payments, which was a new experience for many people until only a few years ago, a service that can be accessed easily in everyone’s daily lives, such as through establishing an environment that enables payments anywhere in Japan with just a smartphone, providing better convenience, pursuing a service that is safe & secure and hosting mass-scale campaigns. Now that the business integration between Z Holdings Corporation and LINE Corporation has been completed, both PayPay and LINE Pay will leverage each other’s strengths, being part of the same group, to create a synergy effect in moving towards the same goals.

n addition, PayPay and LINE Pay have begun discussing the integration of LINE Pay’s domestic QR/barcode payment business into PayPay’s business as of April 2022. *2

As the first step towards that, “LINE Pay” payments, in addition to “PayPay” payments, will be made available at PayPay merchants supporting the user scan method (MPM) which entails the user scanning the QR code to make a payment, out of the 3 million plus locations available for PayPay payments*1 nationwide. This will allow users to pay by both “PayPay” and “LINE Pay” using the same QR code, which is expected to allow up to 75 million customers*3 to use the service, as well as to reduce the effort required to support and manage multiple types of payment methods. There will be no additional procedure for merchants to support the change. There will also be no change in fees etc. New acceptance marks will be sent to the applicable merchants in due course.
