PayPay Corporation (hereafter PayPay) is pleased to announce that it will now be possible to make donations using the cashless payment service “PayPay” at street fundraising events and in facilities of donation organizations, incorporated foundations, national university corporations, and educational institutions. As a result, PayPay users will be able to easily make donations*1 using “PayPay” even when they go out without carrying cash.
*1. Only those who have completed identity identification (eKYC) are eligible, and only PayPay Money can be used. The granting of PayPay Points and PayPay Step will not apply to the donated amount.

Since August 2024, organizations running donation services have been able to create a business account with PayPay to solicit donations. In November of the same year, the scope of business accounts was expanded to include donations to national university corporations and school corporations through websites, and in December it further expanded to support offerings at shrines and other locations. Until now, donors had to enter their personal information and other necessary items on the websites of donating organizations, universities, etc., and pay with “PayPay.” However, with this enhancement of business accounts, donors can now easily make donations by simply scanning the “PayPay” code on the donation boxes inside the facilities where donations are available or at street fundraising sites, and entering the amount. When donating, it is mandatory to complete identity verification (eKYC).*2
With the spread of cashless payment, more people are going out without carrying wallets. By creating an environment where people can easily make donations via “PayPay,” users of all ages will be able to make donations whenever they want to. Businesses will also be able to operate more efficiently, eliminating the need to collect cash or transfer it to a bank, while reducing the risk of theft.
*2 As of January 2025, 33 million users have completed identify verification (eKYC).

PayPay Money can be used to pay for partner services and merchants if it is within the amount deposited into the PayPay account opened after completing an identity verification process. It can also be used for sending and receiving money between PayPay users free of charge. PayPay Money can also be cashed out and transferred to a designated bank account (no transfer fee if using PayPay Bank). The legal nature of this is an electromagnetic record which can be used to pay for goods and services, can be remitted or cashed out, and is issued by PayPay who is a Fund Transfer Operator registered under Article 37 of the Payment Services Act. PayPay Money (Paycheck) means PayPay Money that can only be purchased with wages received by the PayPay user in their Salary Account. Based on the provisions of Article 43 of the Payment Services Act, PayPay protects the debt it owes to its users by depositing assets equivalent to or higher than the debt amount related to the funds transfer balance. PayPay Money Lite is a type of electronic money issued by PayPay, which can be purchased and used to pay for services and merchants. PayPay users can transfer and receive PayPay Money Lite free of charge. The legal nature of this is a prepaid payment instrument issued by PayPay (Article 3, Paragraph 1 of the Payment Services Act). In addition, PayPay Points, which are granted through campaigns and promotions when using PayPay, can be used for partner services and in transactions at merchants in addition to PayPay Money and PayPay Money Lite. However, Time-Limited PayPay Points are restricted to payments for certain services provided by LY Group. They cannot be transferred between PayPay users or be cashed out. Time-Limited PayPay Points have an expiration date, which can be confirmed in the details or conditions of the LY Group measures or promotional campaigns. PayPay Gift Voucher is a type of electronic money issued by PayPay, which can be used to make payments for affiliated services and merchants designated by the PayPay Gift Voucher. However, PayPay Bonus and PayPay Bonus Lite cannot be transferred between PayPay users or be cashed out. PayPay Gift Vouchers have an expiration date, after which they will no longer be valid. The deadline for Gift Vouchers can be confirmed in the details or specifications of the measure or promotion campaigns for which they are issued. PayPay also strives to create a safe and secure environment for users. If an unexpected payment is made by a third party using a PayPay account, there is a scheme that ensures compensation for the damages suffered (the difference will be provided as compensation if compensation is also provided by a third party), given that the prescribed conditions are met. Please see applying for compensation for details.
