We are pleased to announce that PayPay Corporation (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President & Representative Director, CEO, Corporate Officer: Ichiro Nakayama, hereinafter “PayPay”) and WeWork Japan Limited Liability Company (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Chief Executive Officer : Kazuyuki Sasaki, hereinafter “WeWork Japan”) have redefined the role of an office and have co-designed PayPay’s office. The new PayPay office is expected to be completed at the end of September 2020 in WeWork Japan’s new “WeWork Kamiyacho Trust Tower”, which opened on August, 2020. The office is designed to maximize the benefits of physically bringing employees together in an office by reducing the number of traditional desk seats by approximately 75% and providing multiple zones for employees to interact with each other. This is the first time WeWork Japan has fully customized the office to accommodate the new normal way of working.

Previously, PayPay was based in an office setting, where employees worked together in one place. Now, with COVID-19, PayPay will, in principle, be based on working at home and will no longer require employees to come to work. Under these circumstances, we believe we need an office that allows seamless communication between internal and external employees. Therefore, we re-defined our office strategy to 1) redefine the role of an office; 2) avoid the 3Cs and ensure safety; 3) enable co-creation and collaboration. Then we decided to move our office, which we designed from scratch. We will significantly reduce the total number of seats in the office from 968 to 228 (with a 25% maximum attendance rate) and ensure the safety of our employees by enforcing a 2-meter social distance. We also aim to create a more vibrant office that accelerates communication.

PayPay’s new office will feature four separate zones to create Activity-Based Working (ABW) for the new normal, where each employee has the freedom to choose how they work, while encouraging communication and spontaneous collaboration.

● Comments from Ichiro Nakayama, President and CEO of PayPay

In September 2020, PayPay will launch “Work From Anywhere at Anytime (WFA),” which is a new workstyle in which we can performance best while giving top priority to the safety of employees and stakeholders. In order to achieve this, we have redefined the ideal office environment as “a place where new value is created through teamwork and a place where employee engagement is enhanced.” We have asked WeWork Japan to work together to create an office that fits a variety of work styles. “We will not return to our former workstyle.” Although the environment and conditions will continue to change due to various factors, we will continue to evolve and aim to become a leading company that provides innovative services through the experience of making a “payment”.
