“EKIPICK LOCKER” Proof of Concept Trial <Part.2>

- Pre-order goods with the PayPay app & pick them up from a dedicated locker before midnight! Applicable to the on-going "PayPay Pickup! PayPay Jumbo" campaign and the "Cho PayPay Matsuri" staring in March! -

JR East Urban Development Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “JR East Urban Development”), PayPay Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “PayPay”), and Panasonic Commercial Equipment Systems Co., Ltd. are pleased to announce the second proof of concept trial to develop the new service “EKIPICK LOCKER” that will enable a non-face-to-face pickup of goods available in station buildings by preordering from the app and picking it up from a dedicated locker. This time, the service, which allows the goods preordered from the PayPay app to be picked up from a dedicated locker even when the store is closed, will be available between February 19 to March 14 in Beans Asagaya (direct access from Asagaya Station on the JR Chuo Line). Participants of the trial will be eligible for the “Win with PayPay Pickup! PayPay Jumbo” campaign and “Cho PayPay Matsuri: Up to 20% back! (up to worth 1,000 yen)” campaign hosted by PayPay during the period of the trial.

The aim of this initiative is to address the demand for shorter shopping hours and contactless shopping, as well as reducing in-store operations and food loss, all requirements in the era of with-corona. The first trial was carried out at Shapo Funabashi (station building directly connected to JR Funabashi Station) between November and December last year, with the results indicating a high demand for preordering at stores with long waiting times on weekday evenings in particular. To further understand the need for contactless pickups after business hours for people on their way home from work, the second trial will be limited to the evening onwards, allowing goods to be picked up until 24:00 midnight.

The trial will be applicable to “Win with PayPay Pickup! PayPay Jumbo” (*1), a campaign being hosted by PayPay between February 1 to March 31, 2021, entailing the grant of a PayPay Bonus of up to 100% of the amount paid by winning a lottery (Grant limit: 2,000 yen equivalent per time and 20,000 yen equivalent during the period), as well as the “Cho PayPay Matsuri: Up to 20% back! (Up to worth 1,000 yen)” (*2) that will commence as of March 1, offering an economical (*3) and convenient “EKIPICK LOCKER” experience.

*1 Refer to the campaign page for details on the “Win with PayPay Pickup! PayPay Jumbo” campaign.

*2 Refer to the campaign page for details on the “Cho PayPay Matsuri: Up to 20% back! (Up to worth 1,000 yen)”. As long as it is within the grant limit and during the campaign period, users who win in the “Win with PayPay Pickup! PayPay Jumbo” campaign may receive both benefits.

*3 “PayPay Step” hosted by PayPay on a regular basis is not applicable. Please check the PayPay Step Campaign page for details.

■ About “EKIPICK LOCKER”

“EKIPICK LOCKER” (*eki = station) is a service that enables picking up goods from a dedicated refrigerated locker placed within station buildings, by using the corresponding app to preorder goods sold at stores within the station building such as lunchboxes and snacks. Since the payment can be made from within “PayPay Pickup” and the goods can be picked up from the locker, both payment and pickup can be completed without face-to-face contact. Note that “EKIPICK LOCKER” is available only with “PayPay Pickup”.
JR East Urban Development and PayPay will provide customers with an easier and more convenient experience through the collaboration of “EKIPICK LOCKER” and “PayPay Pickup”, contributing to the provision of solutions for social issues such as food loss and work style reforms.

■ “Frozen/Refrigerated Lockers” made by Panasonic

*The is an image and may be different to the actual

The lockers are designed for a non-face-to-face delivery of prepaid and preordered goods, available in three temperatures – frozen, refrigerated, and room temperature – enabling the handling of goods that need to be kept frozen or refrigerated, not possible in an average pickup locker.
The system consists of a control unit (for indoor/outdoor use) and locker units (for freezing/refrigerating). The units can be assembled as required according to the purpose and space available, and can be installed in a variety of locations, including outdoors (sheltering is required to avoid direct sunlight).
In the trial, an indoor control unit and refrigerated locker units will be used to keep the temperature stable for storing the goods on sale.
