PayPay Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, President & Representative Director, CEO, Corporate Officer: Ichiro Nakayama) and LINE Pay Corporation (head office: Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, President and CEO: Maeda Takashi) will enable the use of “LINE Pay” at PayPay merchants from August 17*1, 2021. Amongst the 3.28 million PayPay merchants across Japan*2, this will apply to those who have adopted the user scan method (MPM*3). Furthermore, a campaign will also start to celebrate the integration of QR codes.
*1 The QR code integration of both companies will be realized, as was announced in the press release regarding integration from April (https://about.paypay.ne.jp/pr/20210301/04/).
*2 As of June 2021. This is the number of locations registered with “PayPay,” including stores and taxis.
*3 MPM = Merchant Presented Mode

In addition to making purchases at existing LINE Pay merchants, LINE Pay users can now shop at the 3.28 million locations at which PayPay merchants offer user scan payments. To make a payment, the user is only required to scan the QR code presented at the store and enter the price. This will lead to a large increase in the number of locations where LINE Pay can be used and will add to the convenience of its users.
On top of the more than 40 million*4 PayPay users, PayPay merchants can now also expect to attract 40 million*5 LINE Pay users nationwide without any hassle. Moreover, the sales of both payment methods can be managed with “PayPay for Business,” a payment management tool for merchants. This will keep the operations uncomplicated and merchants can provide customers the means to pay with LINE Pay, just as they have*6 with PayPay.
*4 As of June 2021. This is the cumulative number of users registered with PayPay.
*5 As of June 2021.
*6 About data management: when LINE Pay users pay at a PayPay merchant, the PayPay merchant name, merchant logo, merchant ID, payment date and time, payment amount, and payment identifier will be stored in an overseas server (South Korea) as part of the transaction information and managed appropriately by LINE Pay. Other data will not be included. Further, LINE Pay has been gradually moving its data server to Japan since 2020, with the aim of completing the migration by September 2021. For details, please see LINE Pay’s announcement on March 24, 2021 (https://pay.line.me/portal/jp/customer/notice) (Japanese).
This initiative will be the first step in strengthening ties between the cashless payment service providers that were brought under the same Group through the business integration*7 between Z Holdings Corporation and LINE Corporation. As members of the same Group, both companies will continue to work towards the same goal while creating synergy by leveraging their strengths.
