PayPay Insurance Offers Heatstroke Insurance for 2026

- Available from 200 yen per month, with a 10-yen monthly discount for repeaters from last year. Over 400,000 total insurance policy purchases to date -

PayPay Insurance Service Corporation (hereinafter “PayPay Insurance Service”), a group company of LY Corporation (hereinafter “LY Corporation”), is pleased to announce that, starting today, the 2026 installation of the Heatstroke Insurance will be available through the PayPay Insurance mini app*1 within the PayPay app provided by PayPay Corporation (hereinafter “PayPay”).
Since its launch in 2022, this insurance has gained support from many users as one of the measures against heatstroke, and the cumulative number of purchases has surpassed 400,000.*2
Additionally, the number of purchases in 2025 exceeded the record high of 132,000 in 2024, reaching 150,000.

Offered by PayPay Insurance, this product was the first in the insurance industry*3 specifically designed for heatstroke, and has been offered from April to October every year since 2022.
Medical expenses are paid for when a user who purchased this policy suffers from symptoms of heatstroke due to sun or heat exposure during the period of insurance and receives IV therapy from a doctor at a hospital or other medical institutions. In addition, hospitalization expenses will be covered if the policyholder is hospitalized for two days or more (one night and two days) for the purpose of treatment. Users can choose from a monthly or a selected term premium. The monthly type starts from 200 yen per month (190 yen if the repeat discount*4 is applied), and the selected term type, where users can choose a coverage period starting from one day, can be purchased for as little as 100 yen per day. In addition, if users apply for the selected term premium by 9 a.m., the coverage period will begin at 10 a.m. on the same day. In addition to applying for oneself, it is also possible to apply for all family members at once.
Of the purchases to date, approximately half have been for users’ family members, such as children, spouses, or parents. There are many instances of purchasing the insurance policy for children’s sport activities or for elderly family members living far away.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications,*5 the nationwide total number of people transported to the hospital by ambulance due to heatstroke from May to September 2025 was 100,510, influenced by record-breaking heat, marking the highest since the survey began in 2008 (an increase of 2,932 from the previous year). By severity, those transported requiring hospitalization—with moderate to severe heatstroke—accounted for more than 30 percent of the total, heightening the importance of heatstroke prevention and measures to be taken when heatstroke occurs.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency,*6 the summer of 2026 (June to August) is expected to have higher-than-average temperatures nationwide due to global warming and high-pressure systems covering areas surrounding Japan.

Given these factors, PayPay Insurance Service will again offer Heatstroke Insurance in 2026 to help users prepare for such incidents. Moreover, because the repeat discount that has been offered since 2023 has been popular, it will be continued this year. If eligible users select the monthly plan, they will receive a 10-yen discount.

Additionally, as a heatstroke prevention initiative, Sumitomo Life Insurance Company, the parent company of Aiaru syougakutankihoken Corporation that is the underwriting insurance company, conducted an additional survey for the Heatstroke White Paper*7—which was published in 2025 and demonstrates the relationship between health, lifestyle habits, and heatstroke—and presented their findings at the 96th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Hygiene. In the presentation, data from the 2025 season were added to the Heatstroke White Paper, and a causal analysis was conducted based on findings from prior studies. The Heatstroke White Paper references some data from the Heatstroke Insurance. PayPay Insurance Service also promotes heatstroke prevention by regularly disseminating to users the contents of the Heatstroke White Paper.

If the policy was cancelled prior to the coverage period, the discount will not be applied. The repeat discount is applicable only when purchasing one of the three monthly type plans: Easy Plan, Basic Plan, or Safety Plan. If a user applies for Heatstroke Insurance with the same PayPay account as last year, the discount will be automatically applied.

■ Heatstroke Insurance Details

(1) Coverage period

<Period of availability>
Monthly type: April 22 – September 30
Period selection type: April 22 – October 31

<Coverage period>
The monthly type is available from one to six months.
The period selection type offers a range of one to seven days.

*The coverage period for the monthly type can begin on the day following the date of application.
*For the period selection type, if an application is made by 9 a.m., the coverage period will begin at 10 a.m. on the same day.

(2) Coverage

The insurance benefit will be paid if the insured person suffers from symptoms of heatstroke due to sun or heat exposure during the period of insurance and receives IV therapy at a hospital, based on the decision of the doctor.

<Hospitalization expenses>
The insurance benefit will be paid if the insured person suffers from symptoms of heatstroke due to sun or heat exposure during the period of insurance and is hospitalized for two or more consecutive days (one night and two days) for treatment.

(3) Plans

There are three plans for the monthly type: Easy Plan, Basic Plan, and Safety Plan. There is one plan for the period selection type (the premium is the same as that of the monthly Safety Plan). A broad variety of insurance products are offered to match the needs of users.

(4) Other characteristics

<Easy to apply>
The purchase can be easily made through “PayPay” and the premium is also paid through “PayPay.” If the user’s identity is verified on “PayPay,” the user does not need to enter their name or other information to apply. Premiums can be paid with PayPay Points, PayPay Balance (PayPay Money), and PayPay Credit.

<Easy to file a claim>
Users can file a claim by uploading receipts and medical statements through the PayPay app. The insurance payout will be sent to the bank account designated by the user.

(5) Mini app screen

Users can complete the purchase of an insurance policy with simple steps all within the PayPay app.
The insurance will be provided with PayPay Insurance Service as the distributor and Aiaru syougakutankihoken Corporation (Representative Director and President: Katsuyuki Ando), a subsidiary of Sumitomo Life, as the underwriter.
