Today, PayPay Corporation, a joint venture of SoftBank Group Corp., SoftBank Corp., and Yahoo Japan Corporation, will launch a “Project to Support Your Town”, a joint-campaign hosted together with local governments using “PayPay.”

The “Project to Support Your Town” has been planned in response to the widespread impact caused across Japan by COVID-19. PayPay will provide support in running & promoting campaigns together with any local government in the country that is considering the use of “PayPay” as an economic stimulus measure. Joint-campaigns with 12 local governments have already been made final, including campaigns that have started ahead of the Project in Kakegawa City (Shizuoka Pref.), Chichibu City (Saitama Pref.), Hamamatsu City (Shizuoka Pref.) and Nishio City (Aichi Pref.). Separately, discussions are on-going with over 120 local governments in 36 prefectures about joint-campaigns.
By using “PayPay”, local governments can reduce the cost of issuing, exchanging, or printing local promotional vouchers or normal gift vouchers. It will also mean that users will not have to physically go out to ticket/voucher shops to make purchases, allowing for an easy & safe participation in the campaign while avoiding crowds, providing convenience on both sides.
PayPay is now available in over 2.3 million merchant stores across the country (*1) and has topped 30 million users in total (*2). Since it is available at a variety of shops, including local shops throughout Japan as well as major chains, it will be easy for users to participate in the campaign.
PayPay has 20 sales offices nationwide, providing support to various local governments in running campaigns using “PayPay” as well as to onboard more businesses as merchants. PayPay will continue to collaborate with the different local governments to implement economic stimulus measures for local economies and support the livelihood of shops and residents in the respective areas.
Amid growing concerns about the spread of COVID-19, PayPay now supports online payments for delivery services such as “Uber Eats” and “Demae-can” as well as providing the pre-order service “PayPay Pickup” for restaurants providing a take-out service. In addition, PayPay supports the activities of various organizations working to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by raising money through “Kisekae (themes)”. PayPay will continue to consider various other measures by which it is possible to contribute to society.
*1 The number of applications to become “PayPay” merchants, including stores & taxis, as of June 29, 2020.
*2 Number of users who have signed-up to PayPay after downloading it, as of June 29, 2020.

■Main features of “PayPay”
PayPay is a cashless payment service that continues to expand across Japan, available not only in major chain stores but also at small to medium scale retail stores, vending machines, taxis and even public transport. It is also available in various other scenarios including payments for online services and bill payments such as utility costs. PayPay has also expanded its breadth to services other than just payments, such as the “send/receive” feature that enables users to send PayPay balance (PayPay Money and PayPay Money Lite) between each other for free, or “bonus management” service which enables a simulated investment experience. PayPay also strives to create an environment that ensures a safe & convenient user experience, through measures such as providing a hotline where inquiries are accepted 24/7, and providing full compensation, in principle, in the event that the user is caused any damages.
