PayPay Corporation (hereinafter “PayPay”) will discontinue applications that require users to photograph identity verification documents and standardize on application methods that read the IC chip in the identity verification document by early November 2026. The change applies to applications using a My Number Card, a driver’s license, or a driving history certificate, in order to strengthen security for identity verification (eKYC) in the cashless payment service “PayPay.”
Incidents have recently occurred in which personal information, including images of driver’s licenses, was leaked due to cyberattacks, and the risk of impersonation and other misuse of images of identity verification documents has been increasing. In light of these circumstances, PayPay will implement this measure prior to the amendment to the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds scheduled for April 1, 2027, in order to further strengthen the security of identity verification.
Users can continue to apply for identity verification (eKYC) using the following methods.
* Note: PayPay app version 4.28.0 or later is required.
Identity Verification Using a My Number Card (Apply Using the 6- to 16-Character Alphanumeric Password Set When the Card Was Issued)
This method allows users to complete their application in as little as two minutes. Identity verification is completed by reading the IC chip in the My Number Card and using the information stored in the electronic certificate for signature.

Identity Verification Using a My Number Card (Apply by Entering the Information Printed on the Card)
Users can apply for identity verification by entering the information printed on the My Number Card, using facial recognition, and reading the IC chip.
* If users have forgotten the password for the electronic certificate for signature on their My Number Card, they should use this method instead.
Identity Verification Using a Driver’s License
Identity verification is completed by reading the IC chip in the driver’s license and using the information recorded in the IC chip.
* For details on identity verification (eKYC), including methods using a Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate, please see “Verify your identity.”
